Was a prominent three-quarter back in the Selby Mizpah football team in its Rugby Union days, and for a short time played in thje same position for the Selby team. When in his teens he was looked on in local athletic circles as a potential crack sprinter, and before he had reached the age of 18 had won many open events at various sports meetings. In 1889 he won the 120 yards for youths under 18 at the Selby Gala and the open 100 yards at Hemingbrough. Out of deference to his parents' wishes, however, he ceased to compete. | |||||
